Before You Depart
Insurance
It is essential to have your boat properly insured prior to handover.
Your boat insurance needs to start from the date your boat is due to go to water from the factory. This date will be communicated to you by the team approximately 2 weeks before departure.
Visa / Immigration
Ensure you regularly check with the French Consulate in Australia to stay updated with all relevant visa and permits required before you book your travel to France.
It is important to conduct your own research well in advance on your personal passport and visa status so you fully understand the travel restrictions that may apply to you within the region. We are unable to give advice or assistance in these applications.
Registration of an Australian Ship
Your new boat must be registered before handover in La Rochelle. Keep in mind that this process can take up to eight weeks.
As the new owner, it is your responsibility to ensure this process is completed correctly and you will not be allowed to sail in France without a registered boat.
Please ensure you have completed/submitted your application and registration payment weeks before leaving for France. All documents must have original signatures. This will provide you with your Official Number and all original documents can be forwarded at a later date.
To lodge your application, please contact:
Australian Shipping Registration Office
PO Box 2181
CANBERRA, ACT, 2601
T: (02) 6279 5925
www.amsa.gov.au
To register your boat, you will need the following original documents issued once the boat is paid in full:
- Bill of Sale (title of the boat issued by The Yacht Sales Co.)
- Builders Certificate (issued by the shipyard)
You will receive a Marking Note from the Registrar of Ships detailing the yachts's registration particulars which must be permanently marked on the yacht.
Our Commissioning team will guide you through the marking note on your arrival to your boat.
NB: there are also specific requirements by AMSA in terms of font and size.
Boat Name
You will be required to select and apply a boat name to your yacht. Without one, you will not be allowed to sail.
You can create your own boat name sticker here: www.boatnames.com.au
Alternatively, contact Lily Loyer in La Rochelle who will create any name and logo stickers for you.
Communications and MMSI Number
An MMSI is a unique nine-digit number that is entered into certain marine radio communications equipment. When using this equipment to send a distress alert or to indicate some other emergency, the number assists emergency services to identify you and/or your vessel.
An MMSI number may need to be arranged before sailing in order to set up the ship’s identity on any transmitting equipment.

Imported Equipment
Be aware that ANY equipment purchased outside of the EU and imported into France incurs payment of duties (not VAT), regardless of whether you are a New Zealand or Australian resident, even if your boat has export documents completed.
The amount payable will depend on the value of the item and where it is coming from.
In other words, there are always some levies to account for when sending equipment (new or used) to France. For a general boat inventory, it may be more cost effective to purchase your goods in France.
For shipment of personal effects, you will be required to certify that the items are used (more than six months old). You must not ship NEW goods to Uchimata for them to process the duties, as this is now illegal in France. Only USED items can be shipped and must be clearly marked as such.
If you are freighting used equipment or personal effects for your new boat, please note that a storage fee of 30€/m2 per month will be charged. In addition, transfer of goods from Uchimata to the storage facility and then to your boat will incur a fee (from 50€ each way).
If you would like to use this service, please send items to:
ATT: Ludovic Baumont
SAS UCHIMATA SERVICES
ZA des Minimes
3 Quai Marillac
17000 La Rochelle
VAT number: FR43903120418
EORI: FR90312041800020
Please ensure your freight is clearly marked with your name and vessel's name, and advise the Service team when goods have been sent.
When You Arrive
Your Arrival
Your Service Team will be in touch to advise you on the estimated completion date of your vessel. We do not recommend booking any flights until you have received confirmation of your boat's out-of-factory dates, which will be advised.
Please notify us of your travel itinerary so we can ensure access to your boat is arranged, including pick up at train/bus station or airport.
We recommend that you arrange to stay for a few nights in a hotel to recover from your travels and allow enough time to ready your boat before spending your first night onboard.
Please be aware that you will not be able to move onboard your boat until all ex-factory works have been completed and checked by our Handover representative in La Rochelle. Therefore, depending on timing, you may wish to book an AirBnB or similar for a longer length stay.
NB: The boat is like a brand-new home which will need to be fully furnished with equipment, from bed linen to cutlery etc.
Ordering Equipment
Rebecca will contact you well in advance to compile a list and quote for any extra equipment you would like installed on your boat prior to your arrival.
This is to allow sufficient time to ensure stock availability, so that items can be ordered and delivered on time and installed prior to your arrival.
French Customs and Export Documents
A few days prior to your departure from La Rochelle, your Service team will receive your export documentation from the boat manufacturer.
Our French Handover team will assist you with this to ensure the export process has been completed as required. Once this procedure is done, you can not claim tax exemption on items installed.
French Customs now allow you to keep the boat up to 18 months within the EU (Shengen zone).
Find the list of countries included in the Shengen zone here.
Tax-Free Equipment
To benefit from VAT-free or duty-free purchases, every invoice must be presented and approved by French Customs. This will have to be done by a forwarding agent who charges for each bill processed, which can become quite expensive.
Our Handover representative in France can assist with opening an account for you at the local chandlery on your arrival (See below for chandlery details).
Anything bought there can be processed as ex-VAT purchases. You can also use an App (eg. Zapptax) for any other items you wish to claim tax back on.
Handover Planning
At your boat's handover, we will go through the boat and your contract to ensure you are satisfied that all of the items you have optioned are present. We will then carry out the technical brief and go through the full operation of the vessel with you. Please arrange to be available for a full day to complete these steps.
We will then take you for a Sea Trial to check all navigational systems aboard your boat, which generally takes approximately 1-2 hours.
Sail training on your own boat is also offered with our highly experienced instructors in La Rochelle.
We can also organise any additional crew that you may require.
Once you are happy with your boat and the handover papers are signed, you can relax and enjoy a welcome drink onboard to celebrate!
The Yacht Sales Co. will cover the marina fees up until your handover paperwork is completed and signed. We will then assist you in setting up an account with the harbour master/marina for any extended stay required.
Following handover, The Yacht Sales Co. and Uchimata will be on hand to assist you with moving onboard, organising any further small installation work required, or simply providing local knowledge and outstanding delivery acceptance issues.
